Top 8 Through the Wall Air Conditioners For 2023: Reviews & Guide

Shopping for a through the wall air conditioner?

You’ve come to the right place.

A through the wall air conditioner is a good alternative for those who do not like the look of a bulky AC on their window.

Though more expensive to install and less flexible in terms of placement, wall air conditioners are more efficient and tend to be quieter.

What’s In This Buying Guide?

In this buying guide, we review and compare the top 10 through the wall air conditioners (also called wall air conditioners).

We also explain what through the wall air conditioners are, their advantages over other types of ACs, and how to choose the right one for your space.

What is a Through the Wall Air Conditioner?

Through the wall air conditioner

When you want to cool or heat a single room, there are several options to choose from.

A portable AC is great if you are on a budget and need something you can move from room to room.

A mini-split is perfect if you want a quiet and energy-efficient AC.

A window AC is ideal if you want a powerful and efficient AC that doesn’t make a lot of noise.

Another option is through the wall air conditioner. A wall AC is very similar in function and performance to a window AC, with the main difference being that it sits in an exterior wall.

A wall AC has vents at the back or sides of the unit that take in fresh air from outside. The air runs through refrigerant-cooled coils. The now cooler air is distributed throughout the room by a fan.

Most wall air conditioners sit within a sleeve that ensures the wall can support the unit's weight.

Similar to a window or portable AC, a wall air can only cool or heat one room. Since it is not portable, you’ll need to buy a wall AC for each room if you want to cool multiple spaces.

1. Best for a Medium Size Room: Emerson Quiet Kool EATC10RSE1T

through the wall air conditioner

The Emerson Quiet Kool Air Conditioner is a good option for most medium-sized rooms because of its high cooling output and lots of features.

It can produce 10,000 BTUs, which is enough to cool areas up to 450 square feet. Other than the cooling mode, the EATC10RSE1T has dehumidification and fan-only mode. It is an Energy Star rated unit with a 10.7 EER rating.

  • Highly efficient
  • 24-hour on/off timer feature
  • WiFi-enabled
  • Supports voice commands
  • Interior decorating kit included

  • Difficult to set up Wi-Fi
  • Loud

Our Review

The EATC10RSE1T cranks out enough cold air to cool a medium room efficiently.

It produces up to 10,000 BTUs of cool air that can easily lower the temperature of areas as large as 450 square feet. And the good thing is that there are no warm spots in between.

The Emerson Quiet Kool is Energy Star Certified, so it can cool your room thoroughly and efficiently without putting too much burden on your budget with high energy bills.

It has an EER of 10.7, which is higher than most of its competitors. You can easily run it for long hours without worrying about energy bills.

Another energy-saving feature of the EATC10RSE1T is its easy hour timer function. You can program it to turn on and off after the desired period of time.

This way, you can come back to a cool room and have the unit turn off automatically once you go out.

Issue and Complaints

The only problems with the Emerson Quiet Kool are its noise level and Wi-Fi connectivity. Many users report that it is noisy and emits a loud humming noise at the highest speed.

Others report that they had to face immense difficulty in setting up the Wi-Fi connection. While the instructions explain it pretty clearly, the unit sometimes fails to follow through.

Bottom Line

The Emerson EATC10RSE1T is a great through-the-wall air cooling unit for a medium-sized room. It has a high BTU output and cools areas up to 450 square feet.

Friedrich CP08G10B Air Conditioner

The Friedrich CP08G10B air conditioner is exceptionally silent, making it a good choice for a bedroom, home office, and people who find fan noise highly distracting.

  • Quiet operation.
  • Cool, dehumidify, and fan-only modes.
  • Includes air filter and remote control.
  • Energy Star rated.

  • Poor installation instructions.

Our Review

Friedrich doesn't list the decibel ratings for the CP08G10B anywhere. But one customer who measured the noise level of his 8,000-BTU unit found the noise level to be about 47dB when on the highest fan speed. At the lowest fan setting, it's about 41dB.

The CP08G10B AC is quieter than the hum from your refrigerator, which is surprising considering the fairly high power output of 8,000 BTUs.

The CP08G10B is perfect for midsize rooms up to 350 square feet. You can install it on the window or through the wall.

For wall installation, the dimensions of the hole should be 18" W x 14" H x 7".

The CP08G10B AC comes with a slide-out sleeve, so you don't need to buy anything extra to install it. It also comes with a washable antimicrobial filter to ensure you are breathing clean air.

The remote control makes it easy to adjust the fan level, change temperature, set a timer, and choose a comfort mode.

There are four comfort modes: the normal cooling mode, a fan-only mode for air circulation, a dehumidify mode, and money save mode that automatically switches between cool and fan mode to reduce power consumption.

Keep in mind that the Friedrich CP08G10B is Energy Star rated and has an EER rating of 12.2, indicating high energy efficiency. It's designed to keep the room cool while using the least amount of energy.

Issues & Complaints

The most common complaint among customers was that the installation instructions could have been clearer.

Bottom Line

The Friedrich CP08G10B wall/window air conditioner is a great choice if you are looking for power through the wall AC that cools quietly (less than 50 decibels).

wall mounted air conditioners

If you have allergies or asthma, you must keep indoor air allergen-free when using a through the wall AC.

The Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 uses double filters to filter out dust, pollen, and other allergens from air passing through the air conditioner.

  • Double filters keep indoor air clean.
  • Remote thermostat eliminates hotspots.
  • Cools and dehumidifies.
  • Energy saver and sleep modes.

  • A bit noisy.
  • Poor installation instructions.
  • Sleeve sold separately.

Our Review

Most through the wall air conditioners have just one filter to remove dust and other allergens in the air.

But if you have allergies or asthma, you want to be double sure that the air you are breathing is clean. That's why we recommend the double-filter Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 AC. The two filters capture more allergens, including fine dust, pollen, and mold particles.

Look out for the 'check filter' indicator on the control panel. It tells you when it's time to wash the filters.

In terms of cooling performance, the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 does a great job in small and midsize rooms up to 450 square feet.

In addition to cooling, it also has dehumidification and a fan-only mode.

The AC comes with a remote control embedded with a thermostat. The remote thermostat allows for more precise temperature control and eliminates hot spots.

Other notable features include an energy saver mode, 24-hour timer, and sleep mode.

Issues & Complaints

A common complaint among customers is that the manual could have been better. The installation instructions are poorly written and hard to understand. We highly recommend hiring a pro to ensure the unit is installed properly.

Note that the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 doesn't come with a sleeve. If you don't already have one, you'll need to buy the wall sleeve separately.

Bottom Line

Washable double filters make the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 a great choice for folks who are sensitive to airborne allergens.

Note that the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 doesn't replace a proper air purifier. If you live in a place with lots of dust, smoke, or other airborne pollutants, we recommend a separate HEPA air purifier.

through the wall ac

The Keystone through-the-wall air conditioner is a powerful yet efficient unit that can easily cool large rooms. It has a room coverage of 450 square feet.

The Keystone air conditioner has a powerful cooling function, a fan-only mode, and a dehumidifying feature that allows you to use the unit in multiple ways.

  • Multiple speed options
  • Energy Star certified
  • LED display and a temperature sensing LCD remote control
  • 24-hour programmable timer

  • Remote doesn’t stay connected

Our Review

We like the Keystone 10,000 BTU AC for its low power consumption and powerful performance.

It boasts a cooling output of 10,000 BTU, which is enough to cool areas up to 450 square feet. It has a high EER of 10.6 and is Energy Star certified for efficient cooling performance.

This Keystone through-the-wall air conditioner is a feature-rich device with tons of customization options. For instance, you can choose from the cooling mode, fan only mode, dry mode, and sleep and energy-saving modes.

It comes with a full-function remote control that allows you to operate it from a distance. Plus, the LED display lets you monitor its performance easily.

Issues and complaints

According to the manufacturer, the Keystone through-the-wall air conditioner makes only 55 decibels of noise. However, many users say that it is much louder than that.

They also report that the remote control keeps losing the connection, which makes it difficult to operate.

Another issue is the installation. While most through-the-wall air conditioners come with their wall sleeve, you will have to buy one separately for this Keystone unit.

Bottom Line

Keystone 10,000 BTU Through-The-Wall Air Conditioner is popular for its powerful yet efficient performance.

It is a feature-rich device with lots of options and high cooling output that is suitable for most people.

best through the wall air conditioner

Through the wall, ACs have a thermostat that allows the AC to maintain the set temperature. However, the temperature sensor inside the AC only records the temperature taken around the unit.

This can result in the AC not cooling the room evenly because it cannot read the temperature of far-off corners.

To prevent hotspots, the Keystone KSTAT08-1C wall AC has a thermostat embedded in the remote control. This allows the AC to track the temperature where you are, ensuring you are always comfortable.

  • Remote thermostat eliminates uneven cooling.
  • Cools and dehumidifies.
  • Easy-to-remove front-access filter.
  • Includes auto mode and energy saver mode.

  • Doesn't include a wall sleeve.

Our Review

The manufacturer calls the remote thermostat feature 'Follow Me.' It essentially allows the AC to follow you around the room and maintain the most comfortable temperature.

The Keystone KSTAT08-1C has a cooling output of 8,000 BTUs and is rated for small and midsize rooms up to 350 square feet.

It has the usual cooling, dehumidification (dry), and fan-only modes. You can also set a 24-hour auto-off timer (handy when you are going to bed), activate sleep mode for a better night's sleep, adjust fan speed, and select an energy saver mode.

Issues & Complaints

The Keystone KSTAT08-1C air conditioner doesn't have a wall sleeve, so you'll need to buy it separately if you don't have an existing one.

If you already have a wall sleeve from a previous through the wall AC, use the included foam seals to ensure the new AC fits perfectly.

Bottom Line

The Keystone KSTAT08-1C through the wall air conditioner provides quick, even, and energy-efficient cooling for small and midsize rooms.

6. Best for Medium to Large Rooms: Emerson 230V 14,000 BTU Through-The-Wall AC

through the wall air conditioner with heat

The Emerson Through The Wall Air Conditioner is a smart option with voice command compatibility and Wi-Fi support.

It has a high 14,000 BTU cooling output that can cool up to 700 square feet. It is also Energy Star rated. Plus, the HE Smart app lets you adjust its settings via your smartphone.

  • Supports voice commands
  • Two exhaust vents
  • Three fan speeds
  • Exclusive warranty coverage
  • 24-hour timer and sleep mode

  • A bit noisy
  • Heavy

Our Review

This smart air conditioner from Emerson is a worthy contender for smart homeowners. It has a high cooling output of 14,000 BTUs and can easily cover areas as big as 700 square feet.

You can also run it on fan only or dry mode. On fan mode, it just circulates the air, while on dry mode, it removes up to 3.8 pints of excess moisture from the atmosphere per hour.

Despite its powerful performance, it is Energy Star rated for its efficiency. You can rely on it to keep your room cool without burdening you with increased energy bills.

The programmable timer lets you schedule its operation according to your preferences, saving some more energy in the process.

Plus, the Wi-Fi connection lets you operate it from anywhere, and you can also use voice commands for more convenience.

Issue and Complaints

The two common complaints about the Emerson air conditioner are regarding its weight and noise.

At 76 pounds, you will need an extra pair of hands for seamless installation. Plus, at 59 decibels, it may operate loudly when compared to its counterparts.

Bottom Line

The Emerson 230V 14,000 BTU Through-The-Wall AC is a solid contender for smart homes.

With its Wi-Fi connection and voice command compatibility, it is more convenient than many of its competitors.

Plus, the high cooling output, combined with its energy efficiency, makes it a solid choice for many buyers.

7. Best for Extra-Large Spaces (up to 1400 sq. ft.)Friedrich EP24G33B AC with Electric Heater, 23,000 BTU

Friedrich EP24G33B AC with Electric Heater

Have an extra-large room you need to cool or heat? The Friedrich EP24G33B is one of the most powerful through the wall air conditioners.

  • Powerful.
  • Heats and cools.
  • Oscillating louvers distribute air evenly.
  • Comes with a washable antimicrobial filter.
  • Includes a money saver setting.

  • Noisy.
  • Pricey.

Our Review

Rated at 23,000 BTUs of cooling power, the Friedrich EP24G33B is a beast of an AC. It's perfect for cooling extra-large spaces such as an open basement, a large loft, or a sunroom.

Note that the heating power is about half (12,000 BTU) the cooling power. So it may not heat the space as quickly as it cools it.

The Friedrich EP24G33B AC can be installed on a window or in a wall. Everything you need for installation, including the wall sleeve, is provided.

The AC comes with remote control with which you can adjust the temperature, select fan speed, set a timer, or activate the money saver setting.

In the money saver setting, the AC switches between cool and fan-only modes to reduce energy consumption.

The Friedrich EP24G33B also comes with an air filter that filters out allergens from air coming through the AC. The filter is antimicrobial to ensure no bacteria or mold grows on it.

Issues & Complaints

The Friedrich EP24G33B AC is pricey, which is not surprising given the BTUs. If you are looking for a budget wall AC, this is not it.

Another not so surprising downside is the amount of noise it produces. The Friedrich EP24G33B is not rattle-the-floor-and-walls noisy, but the fan can get pretty loud when spinning at the highest speed.

We recommend installing it a bit far from the sitting/sleeping area. It shouldn't be hard to find a good spot in a large room.

Bottom Line

If you don't mind the higher price tag, the Friedrich EP24G33B air conditioner is one of the most powerful through the wall ACs for cooling and heating extra-large rooms and spaces.

MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT Air Conditioner

Shopping on a budget? We recommend the MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT Air Conditioner. It's rated for small and midsize rooms up to 350 square feet.

  • Budget price.
  • Cools and dehumidifies.
  • Comes with a washable filter.
  • Auto-swing louvers.
  • Remote thermostat feature allows more precise climate control.

  • Doesn't come with a wall sleeve.

Our Review

The MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT is a pocket-friendly option for small and midsize rooms. It has a cooling capacity of 8,000 BTU and in dry mode, can remove up to 2.1 pints of moisture per hour.

There's also a fan only mode for when you just want gentle air circulation.

Other features on the remote control include an energy saver mode, a sleep mode, fan speed selection, and a timer.

There's also a button labeled follow me. When you press this button, the remote control acts as a remote thermostat. A sensor inside the remote control takes the temperature reading at your precise location and sends it to the AC. This allows the AC to maintain the room at the most comfortable temperature.

The MIDEA AC measures 14.5" H x 24.2" W x 20.3" D, but note that this doesn't include the wall sleeve, which is sold separately.

Issues & Complaints

When budgeting for the MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT, note that you'll have to add a bit more money for a wall sleeve as the AC doesn't come with one.

Bottom Line

Though cheaper than most through the wall ACs, the MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT is by no means weak or poorly made. It quickly cools the small and midsize room and comes with a 2yr/5yr (two for parts & labor, five for the refrigerant system) warranty to guarantee durability.

Buying Guide For Through The Wall Air Conditioner

Choosing the right through-the-wall air conditioners is important. You cannot randomly choose any product later to find out that it cannot cool your room.

The size of the room plays an important role in determining the right air conditioner along with other attributes like energy efficiency, operating modes, and an optional heating function.

Below, we discuss all these, as well as some other things that you need to consider when buying a through-the-wall air conditioner.

What is a Through the Wall Air Conditioner and How Does it Work?

As the name suggests, a through-the-wall air conditioner installs into the room into an opening on an exterior wall. The cooling unit is connected to an outer exhaust that sits outside the house.

It is quite similar to a window AC which is designed to sit on your window sill while an in-wall air conditioner sits in an opening on the wall.

So how does it work?

An in-wall air conditioner works in the same manner as any other kind of AC. It pulls in hot air from the room and passes it over a condenser, which cools it down.

The cool air is then pushed back into the room. The motor that causes the entire process produces heat, which the system exhausts out through the vents at the back of the unit, so it cannot make its way into the room.

Advantages of Through the Wall Air Conditioners

best wall mounted air conditioner

You don’t have to give up your window space. You can still enjoy a good view outside and receive adequate light indoors.

Energy-efficient. A wall installation provides better insulation than a window. So a wall AC is more energy efficient compared to a window AC. It also uses way less energy than central AC since it only cools the room in use.

Powerful output. You can cool a reasonably large room with a wall AC. It’s easy to find a unit with 18,000 BTUs or more in cooling power.

Quiet operation. Unlike most portable ACs, through the wall air conditioners are quiet. They provide distraction-free cooling.

Easier and cheaper to install compared to central AC. No ducting required.

Of course, through the wall, ACs also have their disadvantages. The biggest is the installation process.

Unlike a portable AC that doesn’t need to be installed or a window AC that you simply fix onto your windowsill, a through the wall AC requires making a large opening in your wall.

This is not DIY stuff. Unless you have skills, you’ll have to pay for professional installation. Otherwise, you risk interfering with plumbing and electrical wiring, not to mention the risk of structural damage.

The permanent installation also makes wall ACs inflexible. You cannot easily and quickly move it to another room.

A wall AC is also not ideal for renters since it is a hassle to move with it, and your landlord might take issue with a big hole in their wall.

But for homeowners, a through the wall air conditioner is an affordable and energy-efficient way to keep a room comfortable.

Through the Wall vs. Window AC Units

Through the Wall vs. Window AC Units

In terms of performance and even design, AC units are very similar through the wall and window. In fact, some units can be installed on the window or through the wall.

The main difference between the wall and window air conditioners is placement. A window AC goes on your window sill while a through the wall AC sits within your exterior wall.

Of course, this difference in installation gives rise to other major differences.

A window AC is easier to install and more flexible. It's easier to move it to another room or house.

In contrast, through the wall, AC is much harder to move around since it is installed permanently. For this reason, through the wall, ACs are mostly ideal for homeowners, while window ACs are perfect for renters.

Things You Need to Consider When Buying Through the Wall Air Conditioner

Through the wall ac

Here's what to consider when choosing a through the wall air conditioner.

The number of BTUs determines an AC's cooling power. The higher the BTUs, the bigger the room it can cool, and the faster it can bring temperatures down.

Here are general BTU recommendations for different room sizes.

Small rooms (250 sq. ft. and smaller) – 5,000-7,000 BTUs

Midsize rooms (250 – 350 sq. ft.) – 8,000 BTUs

Large rooms (350-500 sq. ft.) – 10,000 BTUs

Extra-large rooms: (500-700 sq. ft.) – 12,000 BTUs

Very large spaces (over 700 sq. ft.) – 14,000+ BTUs

EER refers to the energy efficiency ratio. It is a measure of how energy efficient an AC is. A higher EER means the AC puts out more cooling power for every watt of power consumed.

The most energy-efficient through the wall air conditioners have an EER of 12 or higher. Do not get a unit with an EER of less than 8.5, as it'll be more expensive to operate.

Number of Functions

Most wall air conditioners provide at least three functions:

  • Cooling – usually between 62 and 86 degrees.
  • Dehumidification – typically called dry mode. It's handy if you live in a humid area.
  • Fan-only – provides gentle air circulation without any cooling.

If you want to round the year comfort, look for a unit that also provides heating.

Installation Kit

Check if the AC comes with a wall sleeve and other components needed for installation. If the AC doesn't have a wall sleeve, make sure you have an existing one in your wall or buy one separately.

Noise Level

Through the wall air conditioners are pretty quiet, much quieter than portable ACs. If you are sensitive to noises or find fan noise distracting, look for an ultra-quiet (under 50 dB) model like the Friedrich CP08G10B.

Remote Control Features

Finally, check what setting and features are available on the remote control or control panel. The most important ones are:

  • Sleep mode – keeps the temperature comfortable throughout the night.
  • Energy saver mode – reduces power consumption.
  • Auto mode – Adjusts cooling and fan speed automatically to keep you comfortable.
  • Timer – lets you set the AC to automatically turn off after some time.
  • Fan speed – lets you adjust the fan speed to reduce or increase cooling performance and noise level.

Final Thoughts on Through the Wall Air Conditioners

best thru the wall air conditioners

Whether you choose a portable, window, or through the wall air conditioner comes down to your particular situation.

We recommend through the wall air conditioners mostly for homeowners looking for a quiet, effective, and energy-efficient way to cool a room.

Frequently Asked Questions: Through the Wall Air Conditioners

What Is the Average Life Expectancy of an In the Wall Air Conditioner?

The average life expectancy of an in-the-wall air conditioner is 8 to 10 years. Some high-quality models last longer than that, while low-quality ones may give up within a couple of years.

However, you should always troubleshoot yours before replacing it. This way, you can gain more service time before you finally have to discard the unit.

Do Through the Wall Air Conditioners Require a Sleeve?

Yes, through-the-wall air conditioners require a sleeve or slide-out chassis for installation.

If you try to install a through-the-wall air conditioner without a sleeve, you’ll find that the wall is not sturdy enough to support the additional weight. You’ll end up deforming the wall.

Are window and wall air conditioners the same?

No, window and wall air conditioners are not the same. While they share the same purpose, the main difference between them is their location of installation.

Where wall ACs are placed in an exterior wall, window ACs are placed on a window sill. Plus, you cannot use them interchangeably.

Are Through-the-Wall AC’s Energy Efficient?

Like all the other electronic appliances, through-the-wall ACs are also of two types.

There are slightly expensive, Energy Star rated units, while Non-Energy Star rated devices are cheaper. The former typically uses about 15-30% less electricity than the latter.
