Top 10 Through-the-Wall Air Conditioners For 2020: Reviews & Guide

Shopping for a through the wall air conditioner?

You’ve come to the right place.

A through the wall air conditioner is a good alternative for those who do not like the look of a bulky AC on their window.

Though more expensive to install and less flexible in terms of placement, wall air conditioners are more efficient and tend to be quieter.

What’s In This Buying Guide?

In this buying guide, we review and compare the top 10 through the wall air conditioners (also called wall air conditioners).

We also explain what through the wall air conditioners are, their advantages over other types of ACs, and how to choose the right one for your space.

What is a Through the Wall Air Conditioner?

Through the wall air conditioner

When you want to cool or heat a single room, there are several options to choose from.

A portable AC is great if you are on a budget and need something you can move from room to room.

A mini-split is perfect if you want a quiet and energy-efficient AC.

A window AC is ideal if you want a powerful and efficient AC that doesn’t make a lot of noise.

Another option is through the wall air conditioner. A wall AC is very similar in function and performance to a window AC, with the main difference being that it sits in an exterior wall.

A wall AC has vents at the back or sides of the unit that take in fresh air from outside. The air runs through refrigerant-cooled coils. The now cooler air is distributed throughout the room by a fan.

Most wall air conditioners sit within a sleeve that ensures the wall can support the unit's weight.

Similar to a window or portable AC, a wall air can only cool or heat one room. Since it is not portable, you’ll need to buy a wall AC for each room if you want to cool multiple spaces.

Advantages of Through the Wall Air Conditioners

best wall mounted air conditioner

You don’t have to give up your window space. You can still enjoy a good view outside and receive adequate light indoors.

Energy-efficient. A wall installation provides better insulation than a window. So a wall AC is more energy efficient compared to a window AC. It also uses way less energy than central AC since it only cools the room in use.

Powerful output. You can cool a reasonably large room with a wall AC. It’s easy to find a unit with 18,000 BTUs or more in cooling power.

Quiet operation. Unlike most portable ACs, through the wall air conditioners are quiet. They provide distraction-free cooling.

Easier and cheaper to install compared to central AC. No ducting required.

Of course, through the wall, ACs also have their disadvantages. The biggest is the installation process. Unlike a portable AC that doesn’t need to be installed or a window AC that you simply fix onto your windowsill, a through the wall AC requires making a large opening in your wall.

This is not DIY stuff. Unless you have skills, you’ll have to pay for professional installation. Otherwise, you risk interfering with plumbing and electrical wiring, not to mention the risk of structural damage.

The permanent installation also makes wall ACs inflexible. You cannot easily and quickly move it to another room. A wall AC is also not ideal for renters since it is a hassle to move with it, and your landlord might take issue with a big hole in their wall.

But for homeowners, a through the wall air conditioner is an affordable and energy-efficient way to keep a room comfortable.

Impecca Through The Wall Air Conditioner

A 10,000-BTU AC is just about the right size for most homes. It's powerful enough to cool larger spaces and efficient enough for smaller rooms.

The Impecca 10,000 BTU through the wall air conditioner cools rooms up to 450 square feet.

Pros

  • Perfect for most homes.
  • Good value for money.
  • Multiple modes, including sleep and energy saver.
  • 4-way airflow for even distribution.

Cons

  • Not ideal for large spaces.

Our Review

Impecca recommends their 10,000-BTU through the wall AC for rooms measuring between 350 and 450 square feet. That covers the average size of rooms in most homes.

The four-way air directional flow ensures the room is evenly cooled with no hot spots.

You can also use the Impecca AC to reduce humidity in the room by turning on dry mode. And if you just need gentle air circulation, there's a fan-only mode.

Select the energy saver function to reduce power consumption and sleep mode to set the temperature at the perfect level for sleep.

Using the remote control or control panel, you can also configure an auto-off timer and adjust the fan speed to change the level of cooling and noise.

Issues & Complaints

The Impecca 10,000 BTU air conditioner is designed for small and midsize rooms. If you are looking for a unit that can handle a space larger than 500 sq. ft., this is not it. Check out one of our other higher-BTU recommendations.

Bottom Line

If you are not sure which through the wall to get for your average-sized home, you can't go wrong with the Impecca 10,000 BTU through the wall air conditioner. The price is pretty fair too.

Friedrich CP08G10B Air Conditioner

The Friedrich CP08G10B air conditioner is exceptionally silent, making it a good choice for a bedroom, home office, and people who find fan noise highly distracting.

Pros

  • Quiet operation.
  • Cool, dehumidify, and fan-only modes.
  • Includes air filter and remote control.
  • Energy Star rated.

Cons

  • Poor installation instructions.

Our Review

Friedrich doesn't list the decibel ratings for the CP08G10B anywhere. But one customer who measured the noise level of his 8,000-BTU unit found the noise level to be about 47dB when on the highest fan speed. At the lowest fan setting, it's about 41dB.

The CP08G10B AC is quieter than the hum from your refrigerator, which is surprising considering the fairly high power output of 8,000 BTUs.

The CP08G10B is perfect for midsize rooms up to 350 square feet. You can install it on the window or through the wall.

For wall installation, the dimensions of the hole should be 18" W x 14" H x 7".

The CP08G10B AC comes with a slide-out sleeve, so you don't need to buy anything extra to install it. It also comes with a washable antimicrobial filter to ensure you are breathing clean air.

The remote control makes it easy to adjust the fan level, change temperature, set a timer, and choose a comfort mode.

There are four comfort modes: the normal cooling mode, a fan-only mode for air circulation, a dehumidify mode, and money save mode that automatically switches between cool and fan mode to reduce power consumption.

Keep in mind that the Friedrich CP08G10B is Energy Star rated and has an EER rating of 12.2, indicating high energy efficiency. It's designed to keep the room cool while using the least amount of energy.

Issues & Complaints

The most common complaint among customers was that the installation instructions could have been clearer.

Bottom Line

The Friedrich CP08G10B wall/window air conditioner is a great choice if you are looking for power through the wall AC that cools quietly (less than 50 decibels).

wall mounted air conditioners

If you have allergies or asthma, you must keep indoor air allergen-free when using a through the wall AC.

The Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 uses double filters to filter out dust, pollen, and other allergens from air passing through the air conditioner.

Pros

  • Double filters keep indoor air clean.
  • Remote thermostat eliminates hotspots.
  • Cools and dehumidifies.
  • Energy saver and sleep modes.

Cons

  • A bit noisy.
  • Poor installation instructions.
  • Sleeve sold separately.

Our Review

Most through the wall air conditioners have just one filter to remove dust and other allergens in the air.

But if you have allergies or asthma, you want to be double sure that the air you are breathing is clean. That's why we recommend the double-filter Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 AC. The two filters capture more allergens, including fine dust, pollen, and mold particles.

Look out for the 'check filter' indicator on the control panel. It tells you when it's time to wash the filters.

In terms of cooling performance, the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 does a great job in small and midsize rooms up to 450 square feet.

In addition to cooling, it also has dehumidification and a fan-only mode.

The AC comes with a remote control embedded with a thermostat. The remote thermostat allows for more precise temperature control and eliminates hot spots.

Other notable features include an energy saver mode, 24-hour timer, and sleep mode.

Issues & Complaints

A common complaint among customers is that the manual could have been better. The installation instructions are poorly written and hard to understand. We highly recommend hiring a pro to ensure the unit is installed properly.

Note that the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 doesn't come with a sleeve. If you don't already have one, you'll need to buy the wall sleeve separately.

Bottom Line

Washable double filters make the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 a great choice for folks who are sensitive to airborne allergens.

Note that the Perfect Aire 4PATW10002 doesn't replace a proper air purifier. If you live in a place with lots of dust, smoke, or other airborne pollutants, we recommend a separate HEPA air purifier.

through the wall air conditioner

If you need a wall AC with a bit more oomph, a 12,000-BTU unit should do. We recommend the Koldfront WTC12001W through the wall AC.

It's also a good choice if you are looking for a 2-in-1 space cooler and heater.

Pros

  • Heats and cools.
  • It's also a dehumidifier.
  • Ideal for large rooms.
  • The auto mode makes comfort control easier.
  • 4-way louvers distribute air evenly.

Cons

  • Wall sleeve sold separately.
  • A bit loud.

Our Review

The Koldfront WTC12001W can cool rooms up to 550 square feet and heat spaces up to 450 square feet, making it a good choice if you are looking for an AC that provides year-round comfort.

Note that heating power is slightly lower at 10,600 BTUs, hence the smaller heating area compared to the cooling area.

In addition to heating and cooling, the Koldfront WTC12001W can also dehumidify the room. It can remove up to 60 pints of moisture from indoor air in 24 hours.

For those times, you only need to feel the air moving, you can select the fan-only mode from the included remote control.

Our favorite mode is Auto. It makes it much easier to keep the room comfortable. You simply select your desired temperature, and the unit automatically switches between cool, heating, and fan modes to maintain that temperature.

Auto mode saves you the trouble of constantly adjusting temperature and fan settings, but it also saves energy.

There's also an energy saver mode that cycles between cool and fan-only mode to reduce power consumption.

For installation purposes, the Koldfront WTC12001W measures 14.5" H x 24.2" W x 20.3" D., But this is without the sleeve, which is sold separately.

Issues & Complaints

The Koldfront WTC12001W doesn't come with a sleeve, which is a must-have for wall installation. But this is not a problem if you plan to install the unit in an existing sleeve.

Another issue is noise. Many customers say the Koldfront WTC12001W air conditioner is louder than they expected. You can lower fan speed to reduce noise, but that reduces cooling performance.

Bottom Line

The Koldfront WTC12001W is a great choice if you are looking for power through the wall air conditioner that keeps you comfortable through all four seasons.

best through the wall air conditioner

Through the wall, ACs have a thermostat that allows the AC to maintain the set temperature. However, the temperature sensor inside the AC only records the temperature taken around the unit.

This can result in the AC not cooling the room evenly because it cannot read the temperature of far-off corners.

To prevent hotspots, the Keystone KSTAT08-1C wall AC has a thermostat embedded in the remote control. This allows the AC to track the temperature where you are, ensuring you are always comfortable.

Pros

  • Remote thermostat eliminates uneven cooling.
  • Cools and dehumidifies.
  • Easy-to-remove front-access filter.
  • Includes auto mode and energy saver mode.

Cons

  • Doesn't include a wall sleeve.

Our Review

The manufacturer calls the remote thermostat feature 'Follow Me.' It essentially allows the AC to follow you around the room and maintain the most comfortable temperature.

The Keystone KSTAT08-1C has a cooling output of 8,000 BTUs and is rated for small and midsize rooms up to 350 square feet.

It has the usual cooling, dehumidification (dry), and fan-only modes. You can also set a 24-hour auto-off timer (handy when you are going to bed), activate sleep mode for a better night's sleep, adjust fan speed, and select an energy saver mode.

Issues & Complaints

The Keystone KSTAT08-1C air conditioner doesn't have a wall sleeve, so you'll need to buy it separately if you don't have an existing one.

If you already have a wall sleeve from a previous through the wall AC, use the included foam seals to ensure the new AC fits perfectly.

Bottom Line

The Keystone KSTAT08-1C through the wall air conditioner provides quick, even, and energy-efficient cooling for small and midsize rooms.

6. Best Spaces up to 700 sq. ft.Koldfront WTC14012WCO

Koldfront WTC14012WCO air conditioner

Need to cool a large room? We recommend the Koldfront WTC14012WCO 14,000 BTU through the wall air conditioner.

It is rated for rooms between 500 and 700 square feet in size.

Pros

  • Great for large rooms.
  • Energy saver mode.
  • The auto mode makes it easy to keep the room comfortable.
  • Includes a dehumidifier mode.
  • Handy sleep mode and timer.

Cons

  • Wall sleeve sold separately.
  • A bit noisy.

Our Review

The Koldfront WTC14012WCO AC provides powerful cooling for rooms up to 700 square feet, making it ideal for open-style living areas, spacious bedrooms, open basements, and sunrooms.

It comes with remote control with which you can select various operational modes. The default setting is auto mode. In this mode, you just need to select the desired room temperature, and the AC will maintain it by switching between cooling and fan-only modes.

You can also select fan-only operation if you just need gentle cooling and dry mode if the air feels muggy.

The energy saver mode reduces power consumption by switching on the compressor only when the temperature goes up the set temperature. Otherwise, it works in fan-only mode.

In sleep mode, the AC maintains a comfortable sleep temperature throughout the night.

The Koldfront WTC14012WCO AC measures 14.5" H x 24.2" W x 20.3" D, without the sleeve, which is available separately.

If you have an existing sleeve, you don't need to buy another. Just make sure the AC can fit. If the sleeve is bigger, use foam padding to fill the gaps.

Issues & Complaints

Similar to the Koldfront WTC12001W, the WTC14012WCO doesn't come with a sleeve. If you don't have one, you'll have to purchase it separately.

The Koldfront WTC14012WCO is also a bit noisy, which is to be expected from a 14,000-BTU AC. But you can lower fan speed when you are asleep, watching TV or working to reduce the noise level.

Bottom Line

The Koldfront WTC14012WCO is a great choice for cooling and dehumidifying large spaces. Remember to order a sleeve when you buy the unit (unless you have an existing sleeve).

7. Best for Extra-Large Spaces (up to 1400 sq. ft.)Friedrich EP24G33B AC with Electric Heater, 23,000 BTU

Friedrich EP24G33B AC with Electric Heater

Have an extra-large room you need to cool or heat? The Friedrich EP24G33B is one of the most powerful through the wall air conditioners.

Pros

  • Powerful.
  • Heats and cools.
  • Oscillating louvers distribute air evenly.
  • Comes with a washable antimicrobial filter.
  • Includes a money saver setting.

Cons

  • Noisy.
  • Pricey.

Our Review

Rated at 23,000 BTUs of cooling power, the Friedrich EP24G33B is a beast of an AC. It's perfect for cooling extra-large spaces such as an open basement, a large loft, or a sunroom.

Note that the heating power is about half (12,000 BTU) the cooling power. So it may not heat the space as quickly as it cools it.

The Friedrich EP24G33B AC can be installed on a window or in a wall. Everything you need for installation, including the wall sleeve, is provided.

The AC comes with remote control with which you can adjust the temperature, select fan speed, set a timer, or activate the money saver setting.

In the money saver setting, the AC switches between cool and fan-only modes to reduce energy consumption.

The Friedrich EP24G33B also comes with an air filter that filters out allergens from air coming through the AC. The filter is antimicrobial to ensure no bacteria or mold grows on it.

Issues & Complaints

The Friedrich EP24G33B AC is pricey, which is not surprising given the BTUs. If you are looking for a budget wall AC, this is not it.

Another not so surprising downside is the amount of noise it produces. The Friedrich EP24G33B is not rattle-the-floor-and-walls noisy, but the fan can get pretty loud when spinning at the highest speed.

We recommend installing it a bit far from the sitting/sleeping area. It shouldn't be hard to find a good spot in a large room.

Bottom Line

If you don't mind the higher price tag, the Friedrich EP24G33B air conditioner is one of the most powerful through the wall ACs for cooling and heating extra-large rooms and spaces.

MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT Air Conditioner

Shopping on a budget? We recommend the MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT Air Conditioner. It's rated for small and midsize rooms up to 350 square feet.

Pros

  • Budget price.
  • Cools and dehumidifies.
  • Comes with a washable filter.
  • Auto-swing louvers.
  • Remote thermostat feature allows more precise climate control.

Cons

  • Doesn't come with a wall sleeve.

Our Review

The MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT is a pocket-friendly option for small and midsize rooms. It has a cooling capacity of 8,000 BTU and in dry mode, can remove up to 2.1 pints of moisture per hour.

There's also a fan only mode for when you just want gentle air circulation.

Other features on the remote control include an energy saver mode, a sleep mode, fan speed selection, and a timer.

There's also a button labeled follow me. When you press this button, the remote control acts as a remote thermostat. A sensor inside the remote control takes the temperature reading at your precise location and sends it to the AC. This allows the AC to maintain the room at the most comfortable temperature.

The MIDEA AC measures 14.5" H x 24.2" W x 20.3" D, but note that this doesn't include the wall sleeve, which is sold separately.

Issues & Complaints

When budgeting for the MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT, note that you'll have to add a bit more money for a wall sleeve as the AC doesn't come with one.

Bottom Line

Though cheaper than most through the wall ACs, the MIDEA MAT08R1ZWT is by no means weak or poorly made. It quickly cools the small and midsize room and comes with a 2yr/5yr (two for parts & labor, five for the refrigerant system) warranty to guarantee durability.

Kühl Series SQ06N10C Room Air Conditioner

For small rooms measuring 250 square feet or less, we recommend the Friedrich Kühl Series SQ06N10C room air conditioner.

It has a cooling output of 5,800 watts and can be installed in a window or wall.

Pros

  • Perfect for small rooms.
  • High energy efficiency.
  • WiFi connectivity (WiFi adapter sold separately).
  • Durable construction.

Cons

  • Wireless remote control requires a separate adapter.
  • Pricey, considering the capacity.

Our Review

The Friedrich Kühl SQ06N10C is a compact wall or window air conditioner designed for small spaces up to 250 square feet.

It's a great choice for bedrooms, home offices, and small living rooms.

The Friedrich Kühl AC is a bit pricey, considering it has an output of just 5800 BTUs. But there are a couple reasons for the relatively high price tag.

For one, it's really well made. A thick metal base pan supports the unit's weight while steel inner walls and aluminum end plates ensure durability and prevent rusting.

Secondly, it's one of the few through the wall air conditioners that have wireless connectivity. You can monitor and control the AC wherever you are from your phone or tablet.

This is handy if you want to make sure your pet is comfortable when you are away. You can also use the smartphone control feature to keep your home from freezing or overheating when you are away for a long period.

Note that you'll need to buy a FriedrichLink WiFi Adapter to use wireless remote control.

Be warned, the adapter has overwhelmingly negative reviews with most customers says it doesn't work or works poorly. You may want to stick to the remote control included with the AC.

The AC itself is highly rated with many customers saying it cools the room quickly and operates quietly.

The remote control is easy to use, and you can also use the control panel on the unit. Some of the features and options available on the remote control include temperature settings, fan speed levels, and timer.

The Friedrich Kühl AC also has a built-in 7-day energy management program that's based on a 5-day workweek. The program automatically sets the optimal temperature when you are at home and away.

The Friedrich Kühl SQ06N10C AC measures 21.4D x 19.8W x 14.25H inches without the sleeve. Note that the wall sleeve is included with the AC, so no need to buy it separately. But if you have an existing sleeve, you can use it.

Issues & Complaints

WiFi control is a nice idea, but customers who tried it say it isn't worth the trouble. Both the hardware (the dongle you buy separately) and the software are subpar.

Our recommendation: Don't buy the Kühl SQ06N10C for the WiFi.

Bottom Line

Problematic wireless control aside, Kühl SQ06N10C is still great through the wall AC for small spaces. It is well made, looks great, and is energy efficient.

Friedrich EL36N35B Room Air Conditioner

Do you need to heat or cool a really large space, such as an event venue, workshop, or open office?

The best through the wall AC for the job is the commercial-grade Friedrich EL36N35B 36,000 BTU air conditioner.

Pros

  • Designed for extra-large spaces up to 2,700 sq. ft.
  • Heats and cools.
  • Built-in 7-day schedule.
  • Excellent build quality.
  • Convenient weekly schedule.

Cons

  • WiFi control option is terrible – don't bother.
  • Pricey.

Our Review

The Friedrich EL36N35B AC is a great choice for large homes, commercial venues, and other extra-large spaces up to 2,700 sq. ft. in area.

While it is a room AC, it'll easily cool multiple rooms if you leave the doors open. So you can use it to cool an entire level of your home.

Installation is on a window or through a wall, whichever you find most convenient. A sleeve is provided for wall installation.

Note that, because of the unit's size and weight, you'll need to install it on a wall that is at least 15.1" deep.

The Friedrich EL36N35B AC works in two main modes: heating and cooling. So you can use it for year-round comfort.

It comes with remote control for changing temperature, adjusting fan speed, and programming the 7-day schedule. The weekly schedule lets you set up to four different temperatures throughout the day, depending on when you go to work when you come home when you go to bed, and so on.

The Friedrich EL36N35B AC is also WiFi-compatible, but you'll need to buy a separate dongle to control it from your smartphone.

As for build quality, the Friedrich EL36N35B AC feels and looks solid. It uses heavy gauge steel inner walls, enclosed fan motors to keep out dirt and rubber motor mounts to reduce noise and vibrations.

As many customers have noted, the Friedrich EL36N35B AC is surprisingly quiet for its size.

Issues & Complaints

Don't get too excited by the prospect of cooling your home from your office. WiFi remote control is a great idea, but only if it works.

From customer reviews, the WiFi feature is pretty much useless. Either it works unreliably or doesn't work at all. Stick with the good old remote control.

Bottom Line

You'll have to dig deep in your pocket for the Friedrich EL36N35B AC, but it's worth the money. It cools large indoor space quickly and efficiently without making a ruckus.

Through the Wall vs. Window AC Units

Through the Wall vs. Window AC Units

In terms of performance and even design, AC units are very similar through the wall and window. In fact, some units can be installed on the window or through the wall.

The main difference between the wall and window air conditioners is placement. A window AC goes on your window sill while a through the wall AC sits within your exterior wall.

Of course, this difference in installation gives rise to other major differences.

A window AC is easier to install and more flexible. It's easier to move it to another room or house.

In contrast, through the wall, AC is much harder to move around since it is installed permanently. For this reason, through the wall, ACs are mostly ideal for homeowners, while window ACs are perfect for renters.

Buying Guide: How to Choose Through the Wall Air Conditioner

Through the wall ac

Here's what to consider when choosing a through the wall air conditioner.

BTUs

The number of BTUs determines an AC's cooling power. The higher the BTUs, the bigger the room it can cool, and the faster it can bring temperatures down.

Here are general BTU recommendations for different room sizes.

Small rooms (250 sq. ft. and smaller) – 5,000-7,000 BTUs

Midsize rooms (250 – 350 sq. ft.) – 8,000 BTUs

Large rooms (350-500 sq. ft.) – 10,000 BTUs

Extra-large rooms: (500-700 sq. ft.) – 12,000 BTUs

Very large spaces (over 700 sq. ft.) – 14,000+ BTUs

EER

EER refers to the energy efficiency ratio. It is a measure of how energy efficient an AC is. A higher EER means the AC puts out more cooling power for every watt of power consumed.

The most energy-efficient through the wall air conditioners have an EER of 12 or higher. Do not get a unit with an EER of less than 8.5, as it'll be more expensive to operate.

Number of Functions

Most wall air conditioners provide at least three functions:

  • Cooling – usually between 62 and 86 degrees.
  • Dehumidification – typically called dry mode. It's handy if you live in a humid area.
  • Fan-only – provides gentle air circulation without any cooling.

If you want to round the year comfort, look for a unit that also provides heating.

Installation Kit

Check if the AC comes with a wall sleeve and other components needed for installation. If the AC doesn't have a wall sleeve, make sure you have an existing one in your wall or buy one separately.

Noise Level

Through the wall air conditioners are pretty quiet, much quieter than portable ACs. If you are sensitive to noises or find fan noise distracting, look for an ultra-quiet (under 50 dB) model like the Friedrich CP08G10B.

Remote Control Features

Finally, check what setting and features are available on the remote control or control panel. The most important ones are:

  • Sleep mode – keeps the temperature comfortable throughout the night.
  • Energy saver mode – reduces power consumption.
  • Auto mode – Adjusts cooling and fan speed automatically to keep you comfortable.
  • Timer – lets you set the AC to automatically turn off after some time.
  • Fan speed – lets you adjust the fan speed to reduce or increase cooling performance and noise level.
