1. 4-Stage Filtration
Strictly speaking, there are only three filters. The final ‘filter’ is an ionizer.
Here are the three primary filters air passes through.
Pre-filter: Traps dust, hair and other large allergens floating in the air.
Carbon odor filter: Removes household smells associated with cooking, pets, smoking and other activities.
True HEPA filter: Traps the tiniest allergens as small as 0.3 microns. These include pollen, mold spores, smoke particles, and pet dander.
The fourth stage is an ionizer that releases negative ions to clean up the air further and add a fresh smell to the room.
If you are concerned about ozone production, you’ll be glad to know that this particular model is certified by the California Air Resources Board to produce less than 0.05 parts per million of ozone, which is within the safe limit.
If that doesn’t reassure you, you can always turn the ionizer off.
2. Auto Mode and Eco Mode
You can select the fan speed yourself. For the best performance, however, switch to auto mode.
In this mode, the air purifier automatically regulates fan speed based on the current air quality.
If it detects cooking smells from the kitchen or tobacco smoke from the neighbor’s house, it automatically kicks up fan speed to increase performance.
When air quality improves, it lowers fan speed. If air quality remains good for 30 minutes, it switches to eco mode. The fan will shut down to save energy and reduce noise.
3. Air Quality Indicator
Using a color-coded light on the air purifier, you can get visual readings from the integrated air quality sensor.
The light changes color depending on real-time air quality. Blue means the air is clean, purple means there is a bit of pollution and red means your indoor air is highly polluted.
4. Auto Shut-off
You can set the air purifier to shut down after one, four or eight hours automatically. This is helpful when you go to sleep and don’t need the air purifier to stay on all night.
5. Filter Reminder
Two filter indicators come on when it’s time to replace the filter. One is for the carbon filter and the other is for the HEPA filter.
As for the pre-filter, you don’t need to replace it. It is washable.
Limitations
The main issue we – and many customers – have with the Coway Mighty Air Purifier is the noise of the highest fan setting.
The lowest setting is whisper quiet, the second is a nice distant hum, the third is startlingly loud.
Luckily, you’ll find the first and second settings to be adequate most of the time.
For those few times, you have to turn on the highest setting (or the auto mode turns it on) it’s only for a short time until the air clears and you can resume a lower and quieter speed.
